Why aren’t we talking about the potentially hung parliament?

Laurence Boomert

Candidate for Wellington Central in 2011 General Election

Why aren’t we talking about the potentially hung parliament / left coalition victory from this election?

First up: Congratulations to all democratically inclined people of the world and especially NZ on the success of MMP in the referendum.

Yes, 29.2% of eligible voters indeed vote for National. That’s right - only 29.2% despite all the corporate media's flag waving of 'the greatest victory of all time'.

But even more understated or completely ignored by nearly all media is that 11% of the votes are special votes and are not yet counted.

If national only gets 41% of the special votes 2 seats go to NZ First or Greens and then National doesnt have a majority even with Banks and Dunne

One of the only commentators to highlight the precariousness of the election outcome said with assurance that 2 seats have never changed in the history of MMP from special votes but he seems to have missed that in 1999 on election night the Greens had no seats - Jeannette Fitzsimons missed her electorate win by a few hundred votes and the Party had only 4.89% approx – so no seats on election night - 10 days later with the special votes in JF had won the Corormandel and the Greens had over 5% leading to 7 Seats in parliament they did not have on election night. Special votes often favour the Greens.

I have great faith in this special country and do feel that angels’ wings beat above us on a regular basis. If with the special votes the country is lead by a vibrant very MMP left coalition then considering that the Christian based Conservatives took 2.9% of what may turn out to be National’s critical deciding votes, we may well say that God really has defended New Zealand…from the Bank Of America and Goldman Sachs. Hooray for hope.

This of course will require the Maori Party to express some truly patriotic beating of their hearts and say NO to National instead of being lapdogs to another great sell out of Aotearoa for less than a few more blankets and muskets.

Delighted as I am of the rise of the Greens I am bemused that even with how far the Greens have come they still don’t have a warrior’s heart. They are representatives of the most important issues of our times yet their endless weak politeness betrays us all - they seem so happy to have their bellies rubbed by National for the smallest green dividend – initiatives less than what National would probably implement themselves.

If the special votes leave National in then why not a strong opposition Green Party making aware the NZ public at every turn the unacceptability of the far right agenda over NZ society and its planet killing policies?

PLEASE GREEN PARTY PEOPLE – show some strength and integrity – its late in the crisis.

And hey just for the record I am not anti the principles of National per se – it’s just that being appreciative of the productive sector is not the same as giving your country over to foreign speculators and other rogues, and that's why I’m keeping hope with those special votes.

Kia ora
