Mighty River People’s Power to Organise Hikoi

Mighty River People’s Power to Organise Hikoi through Waikato

A group has been set up to help coordinate the Waikato leg of the ‘Aotearoa is not for Sale’ Hikoi in a fortnight.

The Hikoi is coming through Huntly and Hamilton late in April.

The group’s name highlights plans by government to privatise shares in Mighty River Power. The ‘Mighty River’s People Power’ group opposes asset sales as the assets are part of our national heritage.

The hikoi leaves Auckland on Saturday 28 April and will be staying at Te Ohaaki Marae in Huntly for the night. On Sunday 29 April the hikoi arrives in Garden Place, Hamilton, and then carries on to Rotorua.

Spokesperson Jamie Rolleston says that Mighty River People’s Power wants to help with logistics like making banners and getting information about the hikoi to the Waikato community.

‘We are a broad group based in Hamilton who oppose asset sales’.

Miss Rolleston says the group will heavily promote the hikoi so that the broader Waikato community has the opportunity to demonstrate their opposition to the planned asset sales.
