World day for rail commences Monday

Railway workers and their unions are holding a world action day on Monday to promote rail as a vital, safe and sustainable means of public transport.

The International Railway Workers’ Action Day will mobilise workers worldwide, who will use meetings, information kiosks and seminars to prove that safe, well run and funded rail networks are an essential resource that is worth fighting for.

ITF (International Transport Workers’ Federation) inland transport section secretary Mac Urata commented: “This is the thirteenth annual rail action day, and the event is as necessary now as it was when it began in 2000. Despite their obvious and huge environmental and social benefits, railways remain at threat from cost cutting, privatisation and ‘rationalisation’. This day gives all of those who know rail best the chance to defend it.”

Participating countries include Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Italy, Japan, Korea, Luxembourg, Mongolia, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Norway, Philippines, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, UK, and Ukraine.
