Conservatives Ready to Run in Epsom

PRESS RELEASE
5 May 2012

Conservatives Ready to Run in Epsom

Colin Craig says it’s highly likely he’d stand in Epsom if a by-election was called for.

“Obviously that’s a board decision, but I am confident I would get the nod” Mr Craig said on TV3's The Nation this morning.

While Duncan Garner correctly identified key differences between the Conservatives and National, Mr Craig noted this doesn’t prevent a working relationship.

“Yes there are differences, but they are not insurmountable” he says.

The Conservative Party has always maintained it will talk to, and try to work with the party that received the highest number of votes in the election.

"Our starting point if elected to Parliament would be a discussion with National, as the party that received the most support in 2011. There is certainly common ground where we are able to work together” he says.

It’s well known Mr Craig does not support the sale of Crafer farms to chinese interests.

“I don’t believe the sale of Crafer farms to the Chinese is in the best interests of our country” says Mr Craig. “I certainly wouldn’t have signed it off.”

Craig emphasised the need for significant changes in Government spending.

“Only programmes returning real results should be receiving tax payer money, we need to be much smarter about how we spend” he says.

Additionally the Conservatives are calling for renewed support for research and development, business and innovation.

“Smart government, is about cutting costs while increasing revenue.”

“A prosperous New Zealand requires innovation, hard work, and the ability to pursue new business. These are the things that have worked in the past, and that will work in the future.”
