Government abandons Hot water power and Carbon savings potential
“The Heat Pump Water Heater industry is deeply disappointed in the decision to abandon the hot water heat pump incentive which can drive huge savings in both households and small business power costs” said Garth Wyllie Executive Officer of the New Zealand Hot Water Association (NZHWA).
“While we understand the need
for belt tightening in government spending, moving
households to highly efficient hot water heating systems
reduces the power running costs for households already
feeling the strain of rising daily costs”, he said
He
said “Heat Pump Water Heaters (HPWH) can offer homeowners
up to 75% annual savings on hot water against the older hot
water systems they replace”
Mr Wyllie said, “this incentive was not only a way of assisting households over the change cost but also offers huge benefits to the power supply infrastructure by reducing demand and in particular peak demand points and ultimately CO2 emissions.”
He detailed that “Widespread installation of heat pump water heaters in New Zealand would also result in up to 750 MW of peak load reduction on the national Grid and could save New Zealand up to 320,000 Tonnes of carbon emissions per year, according to industry calculations.”
For an average household we estimate that replacement of old water heaters by a heat pump water heater could reduce carbon emissions by 1.6 Tonne CO2 per household.
“On current carbon credit pricing, that’s the equivalent to $40 per year direct benefit to New Zealand” he said
The NZHWA would implore the Government to build on the work done to date to increase consumer choice by making life easier for efficient minded homeowners to switch to efficient hot water options.
We are keen to offer positive ideas to Government to ensure that consumers and New Zealand have this proven technology and can benefit from the savings that can be achieved from its use
