Wellington Solidarity Rally against Atrocities in West Papua
Wellington Solidarity Rally against Atrocities in West Papua
Join us for a rally at the Indonesian Embassy in solidarity against atrocities that occurred last week in Jayapura, West Papua, where Mako Tabuni, deputy of the pro-independence West Papua National Committee, was shot dead while resisting arrest.
For decades Papuans have campaigned for independence in the region bordering Papua New Guinea. Displaying the West Papuan Morning Star flag can result in a prison sentence of 15 years and severe police suppression is commonplace.
In light of recent shootings, West Papuan groups are calling for a UN peacekeeping force to be deployed in the region.
This Wednesday Wellingtonians will show our solidarity with West Papuans and call on the Indonesian Government to end the oppression and colonisation. Catherine Delahunty MP will join us in delivering a letter to the Indonesian Ambassador.
