Christchurch
Airport response to Judicial Review decision released
today
Statement from Jim Boult, Chief Executive of Christchurch Airport:
CIAL was always opposed to further residential development within the airport’s noise contours. However, CIAL understood the unique position Kaiapoi was placed in and therefore accepted the need for the Minister’s decision.
CIAL notes the Judge’s decision clearly signals there is no implication that land within the noise contours is suitable for noise sensitive or residential development.
CIAL remains opposed to any noise sensitive development within the contours.
Christchurch Airport operates 24/7 and a recent study reveals the airport last year generated $1.7 billion GDP value to Christchurch and Canterbury. Almost 6000 people are employed on the airport campus and the airport also created employment for 20,300 full time equivalents on and off campus.
The noise contours protect the airport’s ability to continue 24/7 operations and as a result protects the value the airport delivers to Christchurch, Canterbury and the South Island.
Noise contours also help protect neighbouring communities from developing in areas likely to experience noise generated by future aviation activity.
