Remains of New
Zealand Soldier Discovered
The remains of a New Zealand soldier ‘Known only to God’ have been discovered at Messines.
The remains of the soldier were discovered in April this year, alongside two NZ Infantry shoulder badges.
After forensic analysis, they have been officially accepted as the remains of a New Zealand soldier. The remains will be reburied in a Commonwealth War Grave later this year or early next year.
NZ Defence Force Military Advisor in London, Lieutenant Colonel (LTCOL) Nick Gillard said the soldier can now be buried with his mates.
“The soldier ‘Known only to God’ will be reburied with ceremonial honours reflecting his sacrifice and service to New Zealand. He can now lie with his comrades who also lost their lives during the Battle of Messines,” LTCOL Gillard said.
Messines was the scene of very intense fighting by New Zealand Division over the period 7-14 June 1917. Around 700 New Zealand soldiers were killed in action during this battle.
Battles such as this one were fought under tough conditions, meaning it was not always possible to recover those killed in action after the fighting had ended.
It is estimated that over half of those who died during the Battle of Messines have no known resting place.
