Formula industry supports Government initiative

The Infant Nutrition Council (INC) supports the decisive action taken by the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) and the New Zealand Customs Service to stop unlawful exports of infant formula from New Zealand to China and potentially other markets.

INC represents New Zealand marketers and manufacturers of infant formula. Members include Abbott, Fonterra, Nutricia, Nestlé, Heinz, Pfizer, Bayer, Dairy Goat, Synlait, and Westland.

"The integrity of the New Zealand infant formula industry is a high priority for INC," CEO Jan Carey said.

"We support the New Zealand Government’s action to protect the image of New Zealand as a reputable source of infant formula products globally.

“We are proud that the quality and safety of infant formula produced in New Zealand is recognised by Chinese consumers, but it is important that in exporting our products all laws are met.

“Our members comply with all local government requirements in the manufacture of their infant formula products.

“We fully support MPI’s approach to inform and educate operators”, Ms Carey said.

The Infant Nutrition Council supports both breastfeeding and infant formula, and represents the major companies manufacturing, importing, and marketing their own infant formula brands in Australia and New Zealand.
