Campaigner to Highlight International Sex Trafficking Issue

19th October 2012

Sex Trafficking Campaigner Visits to Highlight International Trafficking Problem

Christine Caine, Director and Founder of A21 Campaign, an international organization bringing awareness to the plight of thousands of young women enslaved in the sex industry through trafficking, is to speak at a New Zealand conference 1st of November 2012.

Human trafficking is an organised criminal industry that affects every nation, including New Zealand.

While the statistics can seem overwhelming, it is important to remember that every number represents the life of a victim. The A21 Campaign has recognized a significant need in the region of Europe, and is committed to combating this injustice through rescuing one life at a time”, says Ms Caine.

The A21 Campaign comprises individuals, organisations, and government officials, who are committed to abolishing injustice in the 21st century. The goals of A21 are four-fold:

Prevent people from being trafficked
Protect and support those who have been trafficked
Prosecute traffickers, and strengthen legal responses to trafficking
Partner with law enforcement, service providers and community members to provide a comprehensive front against trafficking

Christine adds, “The A21 Campaign aims to abolish sex trafficking. To see this achieved, we are addressing some of the root causes of trafficking by working with vulnerable girls and educating paying clients.”

Debbie Baker, Manager of Streetreach New Zealand, a confidential support service for those involved in prostitution says, “We are pleased to have Ms. Caine come to New Zealand, as Streetreach knows of incidences of women being used in the sex industry here, and moved around the country against their will. We are hoping it will bring more exposure to the plight of women who are the victims of sex trafficking, as it is something most kiwis are simply unaware of.”

Miss Baker believes that women are being trafficked into New Zealand. The USA Trafficking in Persons report mentions that New Zealand is a destination for sex trafficking.
