Adding aggregate to the housing mix

The government’s plans to increase housing and affordability must also take into account the cost of materials. With plans afoot to substantially increase the number of dwellings, the Aggregate and Quarry Association’s Chair, Ben Hussey, says planners need to take into account the amount of aggregate that will be required. “In Auckland, aggregate is already being transported 100 kms or more and for every 30 kms the cost doubles.

“Local authorities need to ensure there is ongoing access to aggregates close to where it is required for building – houses, roads, schools – you name it and a main constituent will be aggregate.”

He said the quarrying industry is keen to provide the most cost effective product. “Transporting aggregate over long distances increases road damage, adds to traffic congestion and is detrimental to the environment – as well as additional cost.”
