Queen’s Counsel appointments welcomed
New Zealand Law Society President Jonathan Temm says the appointments of Attorney-General Christopher Finlayson and Solicitor-General Michael Heron as Queen’s Counsel is absolutely appropriate.
“These are the first appointments to the renamed Queen’s Counsel rank since the law was changed recently. The Attorney-General is the senior law officer of the Crown and the Solicitor-General is the junior law officer.
“Their appointments follow past QC appointments for people in those roles and I believe this is an excellent beginning to the resumption of the Queen’s Counsel rank.”
Mr Temm said Mr Finlayson and Mr Heron were both outstanding lawyers and had leadership roles in the legal profession.
“There will be widespread approval among lawyers that the first Queen’s Counsel appointments should be to these two well-regarded and senior lawyers,” he said.
