Safer Aotearoa Family Violence Prevention Network (SAFVPN) is organising the 3rd annual Matariki Candle Light Vigil event this year, and inviting people to commemorate the victims who have died through domestic violence and child abuse in the last year.

Lead by SAFVPN, the event is supported by the NZ Police, CYF, community groups and the local women’s refuge, as well as local schools and community organisations.

The Matariki Candlelight Vigil on 14 June will begin with a Powhiri at 5:30am on Mangere Mountain by mana whenua. Keynote speakers, who will address the audience these include – Sharon Thom, Operational Manager Child Youth and Family and Inspector Alan Shearer.

SAFVPN Manager, Raewyn Bhana, said the victims’ names will be displayed and announced throughout the vigil ceremony. This will also represent the thousands of residents who are still being hurt by those they love, and are still in danger.

Raewyn advised RSVP is essential for the event as light breakfast will be provided at the Mangere War Memorial Hall after the vigil.
