A fresh face to spark Wellington back to life

A fresh face to spark Wellington back to life

Wellington needs a fresh face for the capital’s mayoralty. The Council has lost its way; suffering from muddled leadership and its inability to make decisions.

Having seen the field of mayoral candidates over the past few months, I have made my decision: I am standing for the Wellington mayoralty as an independent, and will ask Wellington voters to ‘Think Young, Vote Young’.
This decision has been coloured by the response of people whom I have door-knocked over the past two months in Lambton Ward. They want fresh, strong, and prudent management, independent leadership, and vitality, which I believe I can deliver. I will still stand as a candidate in Lambton Ward.

All the declared Mayoral candidates have run for council before; two have been on the Wellington City Council for decades, so must take their share of responsibility for the problems and disappointments of the current council.

The Wellington City Council has become distracted from the city’s best interests, not helped by its poor relationship with the Government. We need a City Council that knows its role, and its limits. Rates have to be affordable, and spent prudently. Core infrastructure services must be delivered efficiently. We must nurture our city’s heritage, cultural heart, and creative sector. Wellington needs more trees, and micro-parks. Wellington’s vigilante parking regime is a blight on our city; this service needs to return to direct Council control.

Wellington is where I was born and grew up; it’s where I went to school, studied journalism and had my first job as a reporter on The Evening Post. I believe I’ve got the drive, energy and commercial experience to help reinvigorate Wellington and get it moving again.

My decision to stand is about the future of Wellington. I’m a champion for New Zealand’s capital so I will always put Wellington first; I will work for the good of our city and the wider Wellington region.

Wellington needs fresh, strong and sensible leadership to regain its vibrancy.  Many feel our city has lost its edge. Let’s bring back the spark.
