‘We Are Hamilton’ Invitation to Meet the Candidates

‘We Are Hamilton’ Invitation to Meet the Candidates

We are Hamilton invites all young people in the city and the general public to attend a meet the candidates evening on Thursday, 19th of September from 6 8pm at the Wintec Gallagher Hub.

We are Hamilton is a Hamilton Youth Council project encouraging young people to stand up and have their say about how to shape the city. In partnership with Hamilton City Council and Waikato Regional Council, the project is a fresh initiative involving young people around elections issues without the stigma that often drives young people away from political discussion. We Are Hamilton features the opinions of young people living in Hamilton city, which are featured online and used as a platform to generate conversation amongst both young and old.

The project founder of We Are Hamilton, Youth Councilor Kate Lunn, explains, “Young people are passionate about many issues affecting the city; however, the biggest barrier to generating change is the lack of communication of these perspectives to the city leaders. We Are Hamilton showcases these views through social media. This has already generated some great discussion between councillors and young people around topics such as fluoride, economic development, and road safety.”

The Meet the Candidates evening has been organized to bring candidates running for the city and the regional council directly to the community and grow conversation relating to youth issues. This opportunity will ensure that attendees will not only be able to ask the candidates questions, but will be able to share their own personal views. The format for the evening will be informal and based around group conversations to enable participants to connect with candidates on a more personal and interactive level.
