Brave Aucklander to Receive Posthumous Formal Recognition
Brave Aucklander to Receive Posthumous Formal Recognition
An extraordinary act of bravery by an Auckland grandfather will be acknowledged by the Mayor on Friday 20 September.
The Mayor will present an In Memoriam certificate to the family of Jack Maynard Wiki, who lost his life while attempting to save his grandson from drowning.
Bestowed by the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand, these awards are recognised as an extension of the New Zealand honours system and acknowledge those who put their own lives at risk to save, or attempt to save the lives of others.
”This ‘ordinary’ Auckland grandfather put the young lives of his grandchildren before his own, a compelling act of courage and love. On behalf of us all, I want to acknowledge Jack’s bravery, as well the loss his family has experienced,” says Len Brown.
Len Brown will present the certificate to Mr Wiki’s family in the presence of the family’s local councillor and local board chair.
