More time for submissions on sand mining application

EPA media release

More time for submissions on sand mining application

The Environmental Protection Authority has today re-notified an application by Trans-Tasman Resources Ltd (TTR) for a marine consent to undertake an iron sand mining project in the South Taranaki Bight and has extended the submission period until 28 January 2014.

People who wish to make a submission on the application now have until 5pm on 28 January 2014 to do so.  Any submissions that have already been made will remain valid and will be considered by the Decision-making Committee. However, people can choose to amend or replace their previous submission.

The application is being re-notified because some documents relating to the application were not available on the EPA website for the full 20 day submission period following the previous notification date of 21 November 2013.

EPA Chief Executive Rob Forlong said it was important that all the relevant documents were available to the public for the entire submission period.  “The EPA is proactively taking this step to ensure that a robust, fair and transparent process is carried out.”

A summary of the changes and details about the application are available on the EPA website:http://www.epa.govt.nz/EEZ/trans_tasman/Pages/default.aspx
