Steel and Tube make a farce of mediation
Workers are picketing Steel and Tube sites in Auckland and Christchurch again after management scuppered mediation with their union representatives yesterday.
“Steel and Tube came to mediation with the exact same offer that’s already been rejected,” says Steve Westoby, the EPMU advocate for Steel and Tube workers.
“They know the workers aren’t going to accept a deal which erodes the wages and conditions of new employees.
“They’ve proven themselves to be completely insincere by agreeing to mediation, then delaying mediation, and now showing up to mediation with no intention of actually negotiating with their workers.
“They’ve said a new offer will be made to our members next week. We expect it will be more of the same.
“Steel and Tube workers deserve a basic level of respect and they’re not getting it from the boss. They’ve decided industrial action has to continue.”
Industrial action has been taking place at Steel and Tube since February.
Workers are on the picket line today at Steel and Tube sites in Blenheim Road, Christchurch, and Cryers Road, Mt Wellington.
