Conservative Party applauds binding referenda on flag

Conservative Party applauds binding referenda to decide N Z flag

The Conservative Party are congratulating the Government on the decision to hold two binding referendums to decide the fate of New Zealand’s flag – and believes it will pave the way for binding referenda to form part of New Zealand psyche.

Conservative Party Justice Spokesman, Garth McVicar, said the Party was thrilled the Government had decided that the referendum process was the best way to settle such a potentially explosive issue.

“Binding Referenda is a Conservative Party policy but we are not precious about this and it’s great to see the Prime Minister acknowledge the importance of referenda on such important issues.

“As the Prime Minister said what price do you put on democracy where people can genuinely have their say on a matter that is actually important.”

“This is a fantastic issue to educate the public on the referenda process and we believe it will pave the way for binding referenda to ultimately become entrenched in the New Zealand psyche.”

“All this goes to prove that a party like the Conservatives does not necessarily need to be in Parliament to influence change, during the lead up to the Election National took on board another one of our policies by announcing the implementation of work in prisons, now binding referenda. We congratulate the Government on both initiatives.”
