Death of Apirana Mahuika
The Governor-General, Lt Gen
The Rt Hon Sir Jerry Mateparae has added his condolences
following the death of Ngati Porou leader Apirana Mahuika,
who died in Gisborne yesterday.
The Governor-General said “Apirana Mahuika will be sorely missed for his strong leadership, his wise counsel and the role he played, at the highest level, as an advocate for his iwi and Maoridom”.
“Last year when I visited Gisborne I was privileged to spend some time with Apirana and as always, he impressed me with the strength of his vision and his dedication to improving the social, cultural and economic wellbeing of Ngati Porou. My sincere condolences go to Karin, his whanau and iwi at this very sad time”.
