Seafood New Zealand applauds prosecutions against illegal fishers
Seafood New Zealand applauds the actions taken
by the New Zealand and Spanish Governments to bring those
identified as fishing illegally in the Southern Ocean to
justice, Chairman George Clement says.
He was commenting on the announcement by Foreign Minister, Hon Murray McCully that the Spanish Government is to bring a prosecution against vessels found fishing in the Southern Ocean in January by the New Zealand navy.
George Clement says the seafood industry fully supports Illegal fishing activities being identified, and those responsible driven out of business.
“While these are not New Zealand waters, New Zealand is party to the Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) which regulates fishing in the Southern Ocean.
“The New Zealand seafood industry is fully committed to sustainable fishing under the rules of CCAMLR, which ensure these resources are sustainably managed.”
