Environment Commissioner welcomes new state of the environment report
Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment, Dr Jan Wright, has welcomed the release of the first complete state of the environment report prepared by the Secretary for the Environment and the Government Statistician.
“Environmental reporting is important for diagnosing the health of our environment and helping us to prioritise action,” said Dr Wright.
The Environmental Reporting Act, passed last month, requires the production of environmental reports at regular intervals, and at arm’s length from the Government.
The Commissioner’s role is to produce commentaries on the reports following their release, to provide a further level of independence.
“I look forward to assessing this new report”, said Dr Wright, “and I will publish my commentary once I have completed my examination.”
