WWF reaction to news Govt considering changes to EPA
Responding to tonight's TVNZ One News story that the Government is considering changes to EPA after mining applications rejected, WWF-New Zealand's Head of Campaigns Peter Hardstaff said:
"Allowing the Minister to appoint Commissions of Enquiry for EEZ mining applications is an unnecessary move that would undermine the independent role of the Environmental Protection Authority. We believe that if these changes go ahead, it will call into question the government's sincerity on oceans governance.
"If the government is serious about creating improved oceans governance and greater certainty for all stakeholders, it needs to create a representative network of marine protected areas."
