Important we get Environmental Reporting right
Federated Farmers has welcomed
yesterday’s government announcement to run public
consultation on its recently launched Environment Aotearoa
report.
“Opening up consultation on the reporting framework to the entire community makes a tremendous amount of sense. We all have a role to play in protecting the environment, whether that’s farmers, other industries and business or the general public,” says Federated Farmers Environment Spokesperson Chris Allen.
Mr Allen says the Federation welcomed the release of the first report in October because transparency is key to prioritising and addressing environmental impacts, but that report also highlighted the need for this consultation.
“The government was open about the inevitable imperfections resulting from the use of existing data sets, but we were surprised to see some data sets inconsistently applied and, in some cases, bold assumptions about what that data was saying,” says Mr Allen.
Federated Farmers will be making a submission on behalf of its members. The government’s consultation opened on 13 November and closes on 23 December. Further information is available at: http://www.mfe.govt.nz/environment-topics-consultation
