Appointment of Dame Patsy Reddy

Statement on behalf of Her Majesty the Queen

The Queen, on the recommendation of the Prime Minister of New Zealand, has been pleased to approve the appointment of Dame Patsy Reddy as the next Governor-General of New Zealand.

Dame Patsy will serve in succession to Lieutenant General The Right Honourable Sir Jerry Mateparae, who will complete his term of office on 31 August 2016.

There will be a State farewell for Sir Jerry, hosted by the Prime Minister, on Wednesday 24 August 2016.

Dame Patsy Reddy will take office as Governor-General at a ceremony on Wednesday 14 September 2016.

The details of the two ceremonies will be announced closer to the time.

Between 31 August 2016 and 14 September 2016, the Administrator of the Government will perform the functions of the Office of Governor-General.
