The Sensible Sentencing Trust fully supports the police decision to target burglars.
The Sensible Sentencing Trusts Auckland Spokesperson, Jock Jamieson says it is “about time”.
“The NZ public have been treated shamefully for years when the crime which affects more of us than any other has the lowest resolution rate of all.”
Police say they will now be targeting those with a known history of offending.
Mr Jamieson says, “The question people will be asking is, were they not doing this before?”
“Burglary rates will only drop when the chances of being caught, convicted and punished become much higher and the sentences imposed cause them maximum inconvenience.”
Mr Jamieson added “since our judges have such a dismal record of imposing meaningful deterrent sentences they need to step up now and support the police in their’ efforts to rein in this scourge on society.”
