UN Women in New Zealand Supports Clark Nomination

UN Women in New Zealand Supports Clark Nomination for UN Secretary-General

For Immediate Release

The UN Women National Committee Aotearoa New Zealand (UNWomen NCANZ) is joining the call for the next Secretary-General of the United Nations to be woman.

“There is a growing groundswell of support around the world for the next UN Secretary-General to be a woman and we agree that it is time after seventy years of male Secretaries General” says President Barbara Williams.

“We are especially pleased that Helen Clark, current UN Development Programme Administrator and former Prime Minister of New Zealand has put her name forward.

“The campaign to elect a woman as UN Secretary-General started in February last year and its great news that the New Zealand Government has given such whole hearted support for Helen Clark’s nomination.

“Not only will Helen Clark be representing half of the world’s population as the UN Secretary-General, she will also be adding her extensive skill set and experience, and her deep understanding that the empowerment of women is crucial for peace and security and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

“Increasing the number of women in leadership is one way to empower women in the workplace and we see no better way of doing this than electing a woman to the top spot at the United Nations, and a New Zealander to boot,” says Ms Williams.
