ASH Anticipates Progress on Plain Packs
Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) congratulates the Associate Minister of Health on an anticipated announcement this morning which will progress Standardised (Plain) Packaging legislation.
Stephanie Erick, ASH Director notes, “This is exciting news and a step in the right direction. New Zealand needs more than just increased tobacco tax to reach Smokefree2025”.
There is overwhelming evidence from Australia that Standardised Packaging is effective. Since implementing Standardised (plain) Packaging in Australia in 2013, there has been a drop in smoking prevalence and an increase in calls made to their Quitline service.
ASH New Zealand is a registered charity that produces and collects sound evidence to enable policy makers and communities to contribute to a Smokefree Aotearoa New Zealand by 2025.
