It’s time for equal pay
The Wellington Pay Equity Coalition is delighted with the announcement made today by the Government that the Joint Working Group has developed principles for the Equal Pay Act.
“The Pay Equity Coalition has been fighting for equal pay since its inception in 2009. We are pleased that our advocacy and the work of many others has been taken to a higher level with the formation of principles for the Equal Act to expedite equal pay,” says Coalition spokesperson Angela McLeod.
“The next steps now are up to the Government. We urge them to do their bit quickly, women should not be discriminated against in this way any longer.”
“It’s the 21st century. Of course women should be paid the same as men for work of equal value! It’s totally unacceptable that we’re not,” McLeod says.
“The work done by the Joint Working Group means that employers will be able to use the principles to implement equal pay in the workplace –in all sectors where women’s work is undervalued and underpaid.”
“We must see Kristine Bartlett’s case for equal pay in the aged care sector resolved rapidly. Fair pay must be delivered for aged care, disability support and home care worker, indeed all women. The unfairness of our pay must be addressed now,” says McLeod.
