UN WNC Calls On Government To Act On Equal Pay

UN Women National Committee Calls On Government To Act On Equal Pay

For Immediate Release

The UN Women National Committee Aotearoa New Zealand (UNW NCANZ) calls on the Government to urgently implement the recommendations of the Pay Equity Joint Working Group.

The Pay Equity Joint Working Group was set up by the Government to look at the principles of equal pay in the Equal Pay Act 1972 given the court cases on the issue last year. Today they released the recommendations from the joint working group, which will now be formally considered by Government.

“We welcome the release of the work undertaken by the Pay Equity Joint Working Group and hope the government don’t dilly dally with the adoption of the recommendations of the Pay Equity Joint Working Group,” says President Barbara Williams.

“It is beyond reproach that in 2016, 45 years after the assent of the Equal Pay Act, women are still undervalued in the workplace through their pay.

“We need to value the input and work of women by paying them equally for work of equal value.

“Empowering women in this way is not only socially and morally right, its also good for business and productivity.

“We look forward to the Government proving that New Zealand is a trail blazer for women by urgently adopting the principles in to the Act,” says Ms Williams.
