Unions Auckland protest TV3's 'The Block'
Today Unions Auckland organised a protest at the open day for TV3's The Block.
August 6th
Over 50 people attended the lively protest. The protesters were calling for action on housing, including turning The Block homes into state homes.
The
response from the crowd to the protest was overwhelmingly
positive.
Rally Organiser Ben Peterson said, "We weren't
sure what the response would be, but when we talked to
Block viewers the response was amazingly positive.
People really love the idea of turning the houses into state
or social housing. It would be a symbolic move, but turning
these homes into state homes could take 4 families out of
living in cars or garages, and give them somewhere to call
home- and isn't that worth doing?"
The response from the public on the day corresponded with an online poll conducted by Unions Auckland which found 90% of respondents supported the call for the homes to become state or social housing.
It seems protesters and The Block viewers agree, but does the government?
"It's really upto John Key now. Instead of disputes between council and government, or housing plans that might take years to enact, there is an opportunity now to take some real action. All it would take is for John Key to pick up the phone and make it happen."
