Paedophiles must be housed behind the wire – McVicar
Paedophiles must be housed behind the wire – McVicar
19th August 2016
“The only question the Government must answer is are they prepared to put kids first or paedophiles first.” McVicar
The Sensible Sentencing Trust says it would be cheaper to house high-risk offenders behind the wire than to supervise them 24/7.
SST Founder, Garth McVicar was commenting after a community uproar over the placement of a child-sex offender near a school in the suburb of Maungaraki.
McVicar said SST had done the figures and it was very clear that it would be considerably cheaper to develop a housing precinct within Prison grounds than the present system of monitoring them 24/7.
“An existing house could be relocated on to Corrections owned land and renovated and hooked to services for approximately $100,000.00.”
A brand new 3 bedroom kitset home would
cost approximately $200,000.00 McVicar said.
“At
present it costs in excess of $300,000.00 per year to
monitor these high-risk offenders 24/7.”
McVicar said,
“The Government could save money and keep the community a
lot safer by adopting such a policy.”
“The only question the Government must answer is are they prepared to put kids first or paedophiles first.”
The Sensible Sentencing Trust in conjunction with the Maungaraki community has launched a petition asking the Government to implement a policy to ensure high-risk offenders are housed within prison grounds. ENDS
