NCWNZ GENDER EQUALITY CONFERENCE
The Prime Minister, Rt Hon. John Key and the Minister for Women’s Affairs, the Hon. Louise Upston attended the opening of the National Council of Women’s 120th anniversary conference on gender equality at Te Papa this morning.
The Prime Minister’s opening speech to the conference noted that while said New Zealand has been a leader in gender equality “it doesn’t provide us license to be complacent”. Acknowledging National Council of Women’s President Rae Duff’s opening remarks he echoed her message that “there is more to be done”.
“We are delighted that the Prime Minister opening the conference and that he has made a clear commitment to advancing the culture of gender equality” Rae said.
“National Council of Women supports the government’s focus in four areas to help achieve better results for women. We believe that supporting women and girls in education and training, using women’s skills to grow the economy, encouraging and developing women leaders and ensuring women and girls are free from family violence will help New Zealand move closer to the UN target of a gender equal New Zealand by 2030”.
“The government’s commitment to overhauling family violence legislation and investment to ensure essential building blocks are in place is well aligned with our goals.”
