Mayoral Candidate to Take Issues to the Streets

PRESS RELEASE

September 16, 2016

MAYORAL CANDIDATE BARRY TIMMINGS TO TAKE ISSUES TO THE STREETS

Dunedin mayoral candidate Barry Timmings is taking to the streets with daily soapboxing on key issues in a bid to show that local elections matter and the public should vote.

From tomorrow – Saturday September 17 – Mr Timmings, whose background includes time in the Royal New Zealand Airforce and more than 20 years as a chartered accountant, is planning to hit key Dunedin locations to speak directly to the residents about key election issues and his vision for the city as mayor.

“I’ve been deeply troubled to hear from many voters that, while they want a change for the city, they can’t see how their vote matters. I’m here to tell you that voting for a change in leadership will make a difference to the future of Dunedin.

“I plan to help build a stronger and more sustainable Dunedin, with openness and transparency and positive leadership. Dunedin has significant issues that will not be solved overnight – from crumbling water and waste pipes to empty retail spaces to an unsustainable landfill – but with a unified council we will work together on the best way forward.”

Mr Timmings will begin soapboxing at tomorrow morning’s Otago Farmers Market before heading to Mosgiel, then George Street and the CBD. He encouraged his opponents to meet him on his soapbox and discuss the city’s issues, allowing the Dunedin public more opportunities to make informed voting decisions.

“I am taking my bid for mayor seriously and am prepared to stand up and listen to what people have to say. I encourage Dunedin voters to come and hear me speak and talk to me about what concerns them. Local elections matter and your vote can and will make a difference.”
