Stop Press: The New Zealand Government is pressing ahead with the TPP Ratification – Why?

TPP Amendment Bill Third Reading - is TPP really Trumped?

The New Zealand Government presses ahead with the TPP Amendment Bill in the face of overwhelming public opposition.

TPP Free Wellington's Greg Rzesniowiecki states, “TPP is a denial of our constitutional democracy and rule of law. It denies future Governments the right to regulate in the public interest, particularly in relation to climate change mitigation.

“It is ludicrous that the rise of the Trump factor is the straw that breaks the TPP!” Greg asks, “why continue with the Third Reading unless the Government believes that the Bill will be of use and cover the scope of a future renegotiated TPP?

“That being the case there is no impediment to the Government signing off on new provisions that might be more odious than those currently imposed under the TPP!” The Government's parliamentary business order paper sets the finalisation of the TPP Amendment Bill debate for Tuesday afternoon 15 November 2016:

TPP Free Wellington representatives will attend the Parliament from 4:00pm to witness 59 National, plus ACT's David Seymour and United Future's Peter Dunne vote for this corporate rights Magna Carta. TPP Free urge them to desist.

Following the passage of the Bill, it remains for the Governor General to provide formal Assent by Signing the Bill into Law. TPP Free encourage Her Excellency to refuse as the TPP is undemocratic and unconstitutional.

Rzesniowiecki adds, “TPP Free Wellington promotes a petition to the Governor General to this effect. TPP Free Wellington has requested an audience with Her Excellency the New Zealand Governor General Dame Patsy Reddy, to accept the people's petition. She refuses to meet us.” 1The request for the audience with Her Excellency is made to satisfy in full the obligations outlined in the 1688 Bill of Rights:

Right to petition That it is the right of the subjects to petition the King, and all commitments and prosecutions for such petitioning are illegal: Petition spokesperson Amanda Vickers states "Given the 10,000 strong petition also signed by the Leader of one of the parties, and the the Bill of rights provisions, insisting our handing this over in person is justified. In this way we can be absolutely assured the people's voice can be delivered to the Head of State.

“We on behalf of the many thousands of petitions feel this is the only means to properly discharge the obligation clearly stated in the 1688 Bill of Rights.” Greg observes, “The irony is that, the leaders of New Zealand deny the democratic culture that underpins New Zealand and its traditions when it comes to important and critical moments where the powerful are challenged. We can only have democracy when it comes to flag changes.”

Ends.
