Pay Equity Coalitions celebrate an historic day

Pay Equity Coalitions celebrate an historic day for equal pay

The Government has today announced that it will accept and implement the Joint Working Groups Equal Pay Principles.

“Today will go down in history in the fight for equal pay and is a day to celebrate” says the Pay Equity Coalition Wellington spokesperson Angela McLeod.

“Today’s win for equal pay has come about because people across New Zealand fought to see women paid fairly and equitably,” says Mrs McLeod.

“We commend the work that the Joint Working Group undertook, their process and their recommendations.”

“The government’s acceptance of the Joint Working Group principles came after a strong campaign from many different groups in NZ society, including the Pay Equity Coalitions in Wellington and Auckland.”

“There are still things to be done to ensure the implementation of equal pay for all working women but today’s announcement that the Government accepts the principles is a huge step forward in our goal to have New Zealand once again leading in equality for women. There is still more work to do to ensure the Government keeps its promise of implementing these principles, and more work to be done to ensure that women can pick the best comparator for their particular job, regardless of where they work. But today, we celebrate” says Mrs McLeod.
