RELEASE
The Auckland Ratepayers’ Alliance is calling on National Party Parliamentary candidate Denise Lee to stand down as an Auckland Councillor while she campaigns for a new job in Wellington as an MP.
Ratepayers’ Alliance spokesperson Jo Holmes says, “In the same way many called out Phil Goff for drawing an MP’s salary while campaigning to become Mayor, it is totally inappropriate for Cr Lee to continue to be a councillor by name, while absent campaigning.”
"Earlier today, the Hastings Mayor, who is also standing for Parliament, said that he would stand down as Mayor no matter the result. We are calling on Cr Lee to do the same, so ratepayers in the Maungakiekie-Tamaki Council ward continue to have a full-time representative on the Council."
“Being a Councillor is a full-time job. If Ms Lee wants to stand for Parliament, good on her, but she shouldn’t expect ratepayers, who are paying her to be a Councillor, to fund Parliamentary ambitions.”
