New Zealand National Statement supports workplace gender equality

The increasing appetite for achieving gender equality in the workforce was the key theme of New Zealand’s National Statement at the Sixty-First Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW 61) delivered today in New York.

The National Statement was delivered by the New Zealand Government Head of Delegation, Hon Jo Goodhew.

“The priority theme for CSW 61 is ‘Women’s economic empowerment in the changing world of work’ - a key area of focus for the New Zealand Government,” said Margaret Retter, Ministry for Women Acting Chief Executive.

The National Statement focussed on the achievement of inclusive economic empowerment for women. It recognised that the changing face of New Zealand’s workplace requires a focus on delivering good results, and collaborating.

“We were pleased that Hon Goodhew could share our recent research on the gender pay gap and Government’s establishment of a working group to recommend pay equity principles at CSW61. The New Zealand representatives also learnt what other countries are doing to increase women’s empowerment in the workplace,” said Mrs Retter.

The Commission on the Status of Women is the main global policy-making body dedicated to gender equality and the advancement of women. Every year, representatives of UN Member States meet in New York to evaluate progress on gender equality, identify challenges, set global standards, and formulate policies to promote gender equality and the advancement of women worldwide.
