Rt Hon Winston Peters and Security Council Resolution 2334
In a Press Release on 12 April, the New
Zealand First Leader, the Rt Hon Winston Peters, described
as a "false claim" the Foreign Affairs Ministry's
confirmation thatsupport for Security Council Resolution
2334 was consistent with established New Zealand policy. In
spite of being a lawyer, the NZ First Leader seems unaware
of the consistent history of UN Security Resolutions calling
for Israel to abide by international law and the provisions
of the Fourth Geneva Convention.
Before making any
further statements on the matter, Mr Peters could save
himself further embarrassment by first studying the relative
UN Security Council and General Assembly Resolutions and New
Zealand's position regarding them.
It would appear that Winston Peters has not studied the UNSCR Resolution, which affirms that Israel's settlement activity constitutes a "flagrant violation" of international law and has "no legal validity". The Resolution, quite rightly and consistently, demands that Israel stop such activity in accordance with its obligations as an occupying power under the Fourth Geneva Convention. There is absolutely nothing new in that.
