It's Time to Talk about Climate Change

It's Time to Talk about Climate Change

In 2015 and 2016 our poor planet warmed at an astounding rate - far more than scientists had predicted. We are desperately short of time to put a stop to global warming. Our government, which subsidises fossil fuels, must act now to switch our energy requirements from fossil fuels to renewables.

In 2016 the Royal Society said New Zealand could get all our energy from renewables within ten years if the government took the lead. The government did nothing.

The recent Vivid Report on becoming carbon neutral, commissioned by the Globe NZ cross-party group of 36 MPs concerned about climate change from all parties has not, so far, elicited any positive action by the government.

So the people must speak. We, The People, must demand action on climate change from our government now.

And we will speak loudly and with passion during the Week of Climate Action, 21 April to 1 May.[see attached]

350.org have organised a series of events focusing on climate change: an MPs debate, film nights, a lecture on the latest science of climate change and to top it all off another big People's Climate Parade.

This is the second in our series of People's Climate Parades. The first one in November 2015 drew more than 1500 people. Unique among typical marches in Christchurch, this Climate Parade will feature an exciting and media friendly drama at the beginning with all the usual suspects.

Our People's Climate Parade is timed to coincide with the massive People's Climate March on Washington, DC, to protest Trump's destruction of environmental laws and regulations, particularly those that restrict greenhouse gases which cause climate change. We're one of hundreds of 'sister' marches in support of the Washington, DC, march.

The MPs debate is organised by Its Our Future Christchurch, the same team that created the very successful MPs debate on the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement in August 2015. MPs participating, all from Globe NZ, are Stuart Smith [National], Dr. Megan Woods [Labour], Dr.Kennedy Graham [Greens] and Denis O'Rourke [ NZ 1st].
