Conservative Candidate Grabs 28% of the Vote

This week at Manurewa High, hundreds of students from the three big high schools in the area were asked to vote before and after the debate, therefore giving a good indication of party perception compared to policies presented.

One of the powerful traits of our young people is that, while marketers and PR campaigns seek to tell youth what to say, feel and do, the youth themselves desire to find leaders with authenticity and integrity. That’s what they found in Conservative Party's Deputy Leader and candidate for Manurewa, Elliot Ikilei.

Here are the pre-debate votes, from first to last:

1 - Labour - 72%
2 - Undecided - 9.5%
3 - Green - 6%
4 - National - 6%
5 - Maori - 5%
6 - Other - 1%
7 - Conservative Party - 0.5%

After the beautiful whakatau, the speakers spoke on Youth Suicide, Family, Public Transport, Environment, Poverty/Inequality and took questions from the audience.

And then, the hundreds of students from Alfriston College, Manurewa High and James Cook High voted again:

1 - Labour 42% DOWN 27%
2 - Conservative Party - 28.5% UP 28%
3 - Green Party - 18% UP 12%
4 - National - 4% DOWN 2%
5 - Maori - 2% DOWN 2%
6 - Undecided - 1.5% DOWN 8%
7 - Other - 0% DOWN 1%

This was a conflict of ideologies with a focus on family propelling Conservatives from last to second place, in only the first debate.

As more people find the practical, solution-based policies of the Conservative Party they too will find hope for the future.
