Labour’s policy on renting a welcome start

Renters United welcomes the release of Labour’s renting policy. “We welcome Labour’s commitment to abolish ‘no-cause’ terminations of tenancies, remove letting fees, introduce transparency around rent increases, and extend the woefully short notice period from 42 days to 90 days” said Renters United organiser Kate Day.

“With around half of kiwis now living in rented accommodation our existing rental laws require urgent change. Current tenants experience little security of tenure, large rent increases, and substandard housing conditions. Labour’s policy announcement represents a positive first step to fix a broken system for tenants” said Day.

"We hope Labour will continue this start by introducing strong quality standards
in the Healthy Homes Bill."

Renters United is pleased the election has focused much needed national attention on the experiences of renters in New Zealand.

“Significant change is needed. The recently released report of the People’s Review of Renting shows that we have a long way to go to achieve the goal of healthy, secure, and affordable rental accommodation for all who need it.

"Renters United is calling for a mandatory rental Warrant of Fitness, licensing of landlords and reforms to the Tenancy Tribunal so it is easier for tenants to bring cases. We will continue our campaign to achieve these outcomes," concluded Day.
