TAIC opens inquiry into passenger train derailment at Britomart, Auckland
The Transport Accident Investigation Commission has opened an inquiry into the passenger train derailment at Britomart Station in Auckland this morning.
The Commission is sending a team of two investigators to the site, due to arrive early this afternoon.
The Chief Investigator of Accidents, Captain Tim Burfoot, says the train, operated by Transdev, is reported to have had 33 people on board when it derailed in the Britomart tunnel.
The Commission opens an inquiry when it believes the circumstances of an accident or incident have - or are likely to have - significant implications for transport safety, or when the inquiry may allow the Commission to make findings or recommendations to improve transport safety.
