Budget a step in the right direction, but misses the mark for children in need today
Variety – the Children’s Charity is pleased to see the Labour-led government is committed to addressing the significant factors which contribute to children living in deprivation throughout the country.
“We commend the Government for acknowledging the issue that is child poverty and creating a framework towards a solution. The initiatives are a step in the right direction in the long-term; but here and now, the role of Variety – the Children’s Charity has never been more important,” says Variety chief executive, Lorraine Taylor.
“It may take years for the results of the Government’s initiatives to trickle down, meaning children living in poverty today will be stuck in a cycle of deprivation.
“We believe that Variety’s work has never
been more important, and with winter approaching, we are
already expecting an increased demand for our services and
relief programmes. As a result, we will be making an even
greater effort to reach out to generous New Zealanders, to
ask them to come to the aid of Kiwi kids in vital need this
winter.”
