Healthy homes organisation says sensors should be funded by the government ‘like the flu shot’

Whare Hauora, a charity which makes home health sensors, says the government should fund sensor kits for vulnerable families “just like the flu shot”.

The organisation is today launching a PledgeMe campaign asking for support from New Zealanders to provide free sensor kits to communities in need. The sensors measure the moisture level and temperature of each room, and are controlled by a mobile app.

“Ideally we’d love the government to throw their support behind our sensors, but until then we’re asking our community for help to provide kits to those who need it the most,” says Whare Hauora Chief Executive, Hīria Te Rangi.

Whare Hauora aims to have a sensor kit - which contains 4 room sensors - in every New Zealand home within 5 years.

The PledgeMe campaign will run for 4 weeks and gives potential supporters a range of options including a ‘buy one, give one’ option, similar to the idea behind Eat My Lunch.

“New Zealand has a nationwide epidemic of cold, damp homes that are making people sick. By helping families to understand what’s happening in each room of their house, it empowers them to take action and provides powerful data about the health of our homes.” says Te Rangi.
