Charities Act review public consultation taking place March 2019

At the Charities Services annual meeting in Auckland today, the Community and Voluntary Sector Minister, Hon Peeni Henare, announced that public consultation for the Charities Act review will take place over March and April 2019.

The Department of Internal Affairs is reviewing the Charities Act 2005, with support from a six person Core Reference Group of external experts.

“Reviewing the Charities Act is a great opportunity for robust, honest discussion about how we can strengthen the Act and ultimately, work better with charities and communities,” says Internal Affairs General Manager Policy, Raj Krishnan.

Public consultation was initially planned for the end of this year. “Recognising that the end of the year is a very busy time for charities, the dates have been revised to ensure there is enough time for good, quality engagement and a successful consultation process”, he says.

Strong input from the sector, stakeholders and the general public is crucial to the review.

Community meetings and hui will be held throughout the country as part of the consultation process. Those wanting to give feedback can ask questions, learn more about the review process, and feel encouraged to make quality submissions in response to a public discussion document.

“I encourage everyone with an interest to get involved when the opportunity arises early next year.”
