Kohewhata Hui Expresses Anger, Unity And Hope Amid Kapa-Kingi Expulsion
On Sunday 23 November 2025 some 300 people from across Te Tai Tokerau attended a hui at Kohewhata Marae called by Mariameno Kapa-Kingi, MP Te Tai Tokerau and hosted by Mane Tahere, Chair Te Runanga a iwi o Ngapuhi and Moana Tuwhare, Tumu Whakarae Te Rūnanga ā iwi o Ngapuhi and Kohewhata Marae.
Mariameno Kapa-Kingi called the hui so the people in her Te Tai Tokerau electorate could hear directly from her about the current situation surrounding her expulsion from Te Pāti Māori. As is the case for hui, it was also an equally important opportunity for all present to share views, ask questions, express concerns, and make suggestions especially as representative voices from whanau, hapū and hāpori of Te Tai Tokerau.
Hui facilitators Dallas King and Hinerangi Himiona stated at the beginning of the hui, “not everyone needs to speak, but everything needs to be said,” there were no un-utilised seconds across the 8 hour duration of the hui. The voices, tones and reactions from the whare were enthusiastic and sincere, sometimes angry, frustrated and sad, and at times the whare was filled with raucous laughter.
The hui also sought to develop a position statement/s on behalf of Te Tai Tokerau based on the discussions of the day. By the end of the day, the whare was able to reach a collective agreement on the following statements;
1. Te Tai Tokerau overwhelmingly affirm our support for MP Mariameno Kapa-Kingi
2. E pukuriri mārika ana tēnei hui ko Kohewhata ki ngā kaiwhakahaere o te Pāti Māori ki o rātou mahi mōrikarika me te takahi i te mana me te tapu oMariameno Kapa-Kingi, me mātou katoa o Tai Tokerau.
3. Te Tai Tokerau demand John Tamihere stand down or be removed by the authorities that hold the power to do so.
4. Te Tai Tokerau desire to rebuild in strength with Te Pāti Māori, beginning with the full reinstatement of MP Mariameno Kapa-Kingi into Te Pāti Māori within a process of hohou i te rongo.
5. In the interim Te Tai Tokerau will continue to support Mariameno Kapa-Kingi in her position as our elected MP for Te Tai Tokerau.
