Alliance: NZ Must Quit Five Eyes And Break From US Foreign Policy

Alliance Party President and Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Tom Roud says New Zealand must adopt an independent foreign policy, starting with immediate withdrawal from the Five Eyes intelligence network.

“2026 has already been scarred by open contempt for international law, national sovereignty, and basic human decency,” says Mr Roud.

“New Zealand cannot keep pretending it has an independent foreign policy while tied to the Five Eyes military-intelligence bloc led by the United States.”

Mr Roud says New Zealand’s security rests with diplomacy, peace, and principled non-alignment.

“We are a small country. Our future will never be secured by attaching ourselves to the wars, provocations, and double standards of declining superpowers.”

He says the lessons of Afghanistan should have ended any illusions about the end results of military intervention in building stable nations.

“You do not liberate a country by bombing it, occupying it, and leaving it broken. New Zealand should have learned that lesson long ago.”

Mr Roud says the Alliance Party stands for an independent, non-aligned foreign policy based on international law, peaceful cooperation, and stronger ties with Pacific neighbours.

“New Zealand should stand on its own feet, speak with its own voice, and refuse to be dragged behind the foreign policy wreckage of the United States.”
