Labour Selects Amanda Clinton-Gohdes For New Plymouth
The Labour Party has selected Amanda Clinton-Gohdes as its candidate for New Plymouth in the 2026 general election.
“I want Taranaki to be a place where our children can grow up safe and supported, with opportunities to succeed, and with plenty of reasons – economic, social and environmental – to be proud of this place,” Amanda Clinton-Gohdes said.
“That’s why I am standing as Labour’s candidate for New Plymouth. If elected to Parliament, I’ll be a strong voice and effective advocate for our region and our people.
With a background in law and science, Clinton-Gohdes brings the ability to navigate complex problems, and serving two terms on the New Plymouth District Council has given her practical experience of the issues people in the region face.
“Over the past six years I’ve been focused on the things that matter for our community – housing, climate action, advocating for our vulnerable – and doing the tough work to make sure our economy is fit for the future.
“Many families are finding it tough right now, something I experienced first-hand as the daughter of a solo parent.
“I know what it is like to struggle to make ends meet. One of my enduring memories of childhood is mum taking on as many overtime hours as she could to help pay the bills, parking me in the office lunchroom with Milo and colouring books weekend after weekend. And it’s still happening, I know how hard many families have to hustle to survive.
“I want to see our region thrive and that the policies we put in place today reflect the needs of tomorrow,” said Clinton-Gohdes.
Glen Bennett, Labour’s Chief Whip, chose to step aside from the New Plymouth electorate so Clinton-Gohdes could stand and fully endorses her.
“Amanda will be an amazing MP for New Plymouth because she's compassionate and driven, and can reach younger generations to engage them in politics”.
Bennett will be standing for Labour in another electorate (yet to be announced).
Clinton-Gohdes has a background in science, law, education and local government. She is married with two young boys. If elected, Clinton-Gohdes would be New Plymouth’s first female MP.
