REINZ Welcomes Significant Progress On Regulation Of Residential Property Managers

The Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) welcomes the positive work of Hon. Tama Potaka, in his capacity as the Associate Minister of Housing, in progressing the regulation of residential property managers.
This development reflects a long-standing advocacy priority for REINZ. As the voice for residential property management in New Zealand, for many years, we have consistently called for a clear and balanced regulatory framework – one that strengthens professionalism, improves transparency, and supports better outcomes across the rental sector. The Minister’s announcement today of a proposed framework, including a public register of residential property managers and a dedicated Residential Property Managers Regulatory Authority, is a significant step towards achieving these goals.
REINZ Chief Executive Lizzy Ryley and General Counsel Melisa Beight met with Minister Potaka again in early March to reiterate the importance of advancing this work. We are encouraged to see the Minister progressing this priority, with a clear focus on the need for greater oversight in the sector and recognising the value that appropriate regulation can bring to property owners, investors and tenants.
REINZ supports regulation that delivers meaningful benefits for the people involved in New Zealand’s rental sector, especially where it enhances the welfare, safety, and overall wellbeing of tenants. A well- designed framework will ensure consistent standards of practice, build public confidence, and provide greater clarity in the rental market.
